The past six months we lost some very dedicated Masons who were members of Crow Canyon Lodge. Sometimes we lose traditions in a lodge, and that’s OK. However sometimes we forget our blue lodge obligations. The California Masonic Code requires us as Masons to attend a Brothers funeral/memorial service whether you knew him or not: Duty to attend 804.855 It is the duty of every member to attend the funeral of a deceased member of this lodge or any other Master Mason residing in the vicinity of his Lodge at the time of death, if he can do so without great inconvenience.
I understand that our newer Masons are seeking “further light” in Masonry. But the strength of a Blue lodge is within the membership that adheres to their obligation and duties as a Mason.
It is also the duty of Masons who have a greater seniority to teach the newer members what is expected of them. I feel that I may have not impressed on the newer members the importance of teaching, NOT TRADITIONS, BUT OBLIGATIONS. Brother Roy Nelson who recently died was an important member of our lodge. Worshipful Roy Tamez delivered the Masonic funeral ritual in Brother Nelson’s church. The church attendance was close to 75 people. Only six Masons attended (see CMC 804.855). It would have been a great opportunity to show the public how dedicated we are to a fallen Brother. I am always available for coaching and during that time is when we should be teaching obligations and not just ritual and history!
