Brethren:
The Month of May is upon us and Spring is officially here. It is believed that May is named after the Greek goddess Maia, the daughter of Atlas and the mother of Hermes. She was considered the goddess of Spring and growth. Her Roman equivalent, Bona Dea, was known as the goddess of fertility and is related to the Latin word "Maius". She was also associated with growth and springtime. For avid gardeners like myself, May is the time to start prepping the soil and purchasing seeds and plants for this year's vegetable garden. Every year, I try to plant something new or a different variety that I have not tried before; sometimes it works and at other times it does not. That is what gardening is all about.
Three special holidays occur in the month of May; Cinco de Mayo on May 5th, Mothers Day on May 11th, and Memorial Day on May 26th. Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, commemorates all men and women who have died in military service in the United States.
Until next month, have a pleasant May and I hope to see you in Lodge!
