There are many personal benefits to becoming a Mason, and the rewards can be different for each person. But all Masons share a common goal: to become a better man.
Becoming a Mason
If you have an interest in becoming a Freemason, you have taken your first step in the right direction. Freemasonry can be such a diverse interest and has the potential for a lifelong relationship that gives back continually. The beauty of how Freemasonry works is you only need to commit what you want or can, in time and effort. Tasks and roles are never forced upon you. Although Freemasonry requires commitment, and dedication, you will never be asked to place Freemasonry ahead of family, work, or religion.
Applying for Membership
One of Masonry’s customs is not to solicit members; men must seek membership on their own through a Mason they know or a local lodge.
California Masonic membership is open to men age 18 or older who meet the qualifications and standards of character and intention, and who believe in a Supreme Being. Men of all ethnic and religious backgrounds are welcome.
A Mason who recommends you for membership will assist with completing and submitting the application. After submitting the application, you will be interviewed by members of the lodge you wish to join so they can learn more about you and you can learn more about Freemasonry. If the interview is favorable, your application is presented to the lodge for a vote. If the vote is affirmative, you receive the Entered Apprentice degree – the first degree of Freemasonry. When you advance through the next two degrees, you are a Master Mason and a full member of the fraternity.
A Fraternity for Fellowship, Morality & Tradition
When you become a Mason, you become part of ancient tradition that spans centuries.
From the original stonemasons that produced some of the most majestic architectural wonders of Europe to modern day Masons who participate in numerous charitable foundations, you’ll feel connected to a vital, growing and spiritually uplifting organization of moral men.
You’ll share the values of the great men who founded the United States: Men who believed in the brotherhood of man and the ideals expressed in the U.S. Constitution.
Freemasonry is built upon the tenets of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. Brotherly love is the practice of the golden rule. Relief embodies charity for all mankind. Truth is honesty, fair play and adherence to cardinal virtues. Above all, men of all faiths are welcome, as long as they believe in a Supreme Being.
